One of the primary reasons is that Korea has forbidden the inflow of Japanese popular culture until 1998, which hindered timely, constant releases of the Godzilla series. The other is that giant monster movies are not that popular in the country (Shim Hyung-rae’s DRAGON WARS, which was a great hit in 2007, is a completely different story). Those two reasons have resulted in such low awareness and mass appeal to giant monster movies in general in the peninsular.     Sony Has No Plans For A New Godzilla Film Author: Keith Aiken Source: Sony Pictures Last month the German movie news website Cinetech reported that Sony Pictures was considering a sequel to their American version of GODZILLA (1998) for the summer of 2009. Today, reps from Sony stated that there is nothing to the story, and the studio has no plans to make another Godzilla film. While the end result proved to be a disappointment, Sony initially had high hopes for Godzilla, seeing the monster as a franchise character strong enough to support a series of big budget movies in the United States. Gareth Edwards’ 2014 GODZILLA has at least one unintended consequence; it reinforces my belief that Ishiro Honda’s 1954 GODZILLA was an incredibly stunning artistic achievement. After six decades of technological development, the finest cinematic artisans and craftsmen in the business and an incomprehensibly larger budget, Edwards’ film does not surpass the original Japanese movie’s terrifying commentary. Mr. Honda’s 1954 GODZILLA has a cohesively clear story and artistic statement that still gets me after a few hundred viewings over five decades. This year’s GODZILLA is a fine movie that I enjoyed more than many other recent special effects extravaganzas. In no way do I mean to diminish Edwards’ achievement here when I pledge allegiance to Mr. Honda’s

Pictures, Legendary Pictures Official Site: Godzillamovie.com GODZILLA received a giant media event premiere Thursday night at the Dolby Theater on Hollywood Boulevard that was mostly attended by media and movie industry insiders. The press corps appeared to number in the several hundred with an equal number of Warner Bros staffers and security. The only thing missing were fans of the movie. Most of the people I saw on the north side of Hollywood Boulevard appeared to be fans of the actors and other celebrities, tourists, amateur paparazzi and the professional autograph hunters who attend every red carpet event. Ten years earlier, the nearby Chinese Theater was the site of the GODZILLA: FINAL WARS premiere and the ceremony unveiling Godzilla’s Star on the Hollywood Walk
