You still don’t know all of the epic story…

Walt Disney Japan Co., Ltd. has announced that NEW KABUKI: NAUSICAÄ OF THE VALLEY OF THE WIND (新作歌舞伎『風の谷のナウシカ』, Shinsaku Kabuki Kaze no Tani no Naushika) will be released on Blu-ray and DVD in Japan on January 20, 2021. The live stage performance ran from December 6-25, 2019 at the Shinbashi Enbujo theater in Tokyo’s Ginza district. Tickets for the shows sold out in a single same day.

The kabuki show is based on Studio Ghibli founder Hayao Miyazaki’s 1982 manga series masterpiece Nausicaä of the Valley of the Windm which Mayazki adapted into a internationally acclaimed anime feature film in 1984. The live version presents all seven volumes of the manga, including major story elements that were not depicted in the movie. This is the first time that a Hayao Miyazaki/Studio Ghibli’s work has been staged in Kabuki.

The cast features two famous Kabuki actors with the main character Nausicaä played by Onoe Kikunosuke V, and her opponent Princess Kushana played by Nakamura Shichinosuke II. The script was written by Keiko Niwa, screenwriter for several Studio Ghibli films such as TALES FROM EARTHSEA (ゲド戦記, Gedo Senki, 2006), THE SECRET WORLD OF ARRIETTY (借りぐらしのアリエッティ, Karigurashi no Arrietty, 2010), FROM UP ON POPPY HILL (コクリコ坂から, Kokuriko-Zaka Kara, 2011) and WHEN MARNIE WAS THERE (思い出のマーニー, Omoide no Mānī, 2014), working with Kazuhisa Tobe (NEW KABUKI: NARUTO) to create the onstage world of NAUSICAÄ.

NEW KABUKI: NAUSICAÄ OF THE VALLEY OF THE WIND Blu-ray and DVD will present the story in two chapters; “day” and “night.” The discs will be packaged in a clamshell case with reversible cover art, inside a three-sided hard case. Bonus content include a 32 page photo book and the videos “Production Announcement”, “Senryaku Curtain Call”, and “Interview with Onoe Kikunosuke V ~ A Heart That Never Gives Up, a Challenge to Nausicaä ~”.
