Since its first appearance in 1954, the monster Godzilla has captivated and shocked not only Japan but the world. GODZILLA MINUS ONE, the 70th anniversary movie, the 30th live-action Godzilla film produced in Japan, and the first Godzilla of 2023 was released in Japan on Friday, November 3, 2023 (national holiday), "Godzilla Day!"

The film's director, screenwriter, and VFX director is Takashi Yamazaki, a life-long Godzilla fan. Ryunosuke Kamiki plays the lead role, while the heroine is played by Minami Hamabe. In addition, a lineup of talented actors including Hiroki Yamada, Takataka Aoki, Hidetaka Yoshioka, Sakura Ando, and Kuranosuke Sasaki stand together to fight against Godzilla.

The movie, which opened in 522 theaters across Japan (including large-format theaters), was a "Godzilla-level" blockbuster, drawing 2.87 million viewers and grossing over 4.42 billion yen (30,902,209 USD) in 45 days as of Sunday, December 17. The film also made a big splash when it won the "48th Hochi Film Award" for Best Director.

In North America, the GODZILLA MINUS ONE opened on Friday, December 1, breaking a 34-year record within 5 days of its release by becoming the highest-grossing Japanese live-action film of all time at the U.S. box office! It has now grossed over $34.41 million in its 17 days of release through December 17! It is also the highest-grossing foreign film released in North America in 2023! The movie won the "Chicago Film Critics Association Award for Best Visual Effects" and the "Las Vegas Film Critics Association Award for Best International Horror/Science Fiction Film" and has been nominated for numerous other international film awards. Japan's Godzilla is making great strides across the United States!

Director Takashi Yamazaki's goal with this film was to create a "scary Godzilla." The black-and-white version of GODZILLA MINUS ONE was created to allow viewers to experience a worldview reminiscent of the first film, GODZILLA  (ゴジラ, Gojira, 1954)! GODZILLA MINUS ONE/MINUS COLOR will be screened in 340 theaters nationwide from Friday, January 12, 2024. The color GODZILLA MINUS ONE will continue to be screened in theaters nationwide, and both versions can be enjoyed at movie theaters in Japan.

In 2024, experience the "most fearsome" Godzilla created by director Takashi Yamazaki in a new way!

A new poster visual and trailer have been released!

The new poster visual shows Godzilla destroying a city and roaring in a world without colors. The lack of color information brings out Godzilla's elaborate form, making it seem even more realistic and terrifying. The trailer begins with the words, "I have some extraordinary news," the announcement of Godzilla's arrival, reminiscent of the original GODZILLA. This is followed by a monochrome depictions of the terror of coming eye-to-eye with Godzilla in the darkness, and the threat of Godzilla destroying Ginza, creating a greater sense of urgency than before.

    Director Takashi Yamazaki comments

We are now able to announce GODZILLA MINUS ONE/MINUS COLOR, which we have been working on for a long time. We didn't just make the film in black and white, but rather had the crew make adjustments to each cut, making full use of various mattes, as if they were creating a new film. Our goal was to create a visual tone that looked as if it was taken by masters of monochrome photography. We were able to unearth the texture of the skin and the details of the landscape that were latent in the filmed data. Then, a horrifying, documentary-like Godzilla emerged. The loss of color has given the film a new sense of reality. Please come to the theater and live and further resist the fear.
