ALWAYS- SUNSET ON THIRD STREET- 2 (Always-Zoku San-Chome no Yuhi) 2007, 147 min., 35mm. Directed by Takashi Yamazaki. With Hidetaka Yoshioka, Shinichi Tsutsumi and Koyuki. In Japanese with English subtitles. Co-presented with JAPAN CUTS: Festival of New Japanese Film. New York Premiere. Another lavish blockbuster from Japan, but this time around the residents of Third Street return and the good times are killing them. Tokyo`s hosting the 1964 Olympics, the economy is booming, houses are filling up with modern appliances but something`s gotten lost in the shuffle. Will Third Street be destroyed by Japan`s bubble economy? Or maybe it`ll be destroyed by Godzilla? Seriously… The sequel to the 2005 blockbuster ALWAYS- SUNSET ON THIRD STREET has proven to be a success in its own right by becoming one of the top grossing Japanese films of 2007 and earning a Best Picture nomination from the Japan Academy. Writer/director Takashi Yamazaki brings back the main cast and crew for ALWAYS 2, and ups the ante with a “special guest appearance” by Godzilla. ALWAYS 2 will have one of its first US screenings in New York City early next month during a co-presentation between New York Asian Film Festival and JAPAN CUTS. Now the good folks at NYAFF have offered SciFi Japan readers a chance to win free tickets to see the award-winning film (and Godzilla’s cameo) on the big screen!
