STORY A piece of a comet breaks away and falls to earth as it passes over Japan for the first time in a thousand years... Mitsuha, a teen girl, is tired of living in a small mountain village. Sick of her father`s mayoral campaign, her family, the local shrine and its old customs, she longs for the freedom to chose a new life in the big city. She pleads to God, “Please, let me be a handsome Tokyo boy in my next life!” The next morning, Mitsuha awakens as a high school male in an unfamiliar room with the Tokyo skyline spread before her eyes. On the other hand, Tokyo high school student Taki wakes from what seemed like a very important dream. Only not in his own room or body... but that of a girl! Based on the information around her, Mitsuha learns Taka is the boy whose body she inhabits. The two have switched places! When they wake up again, they’ve returned to their former selves. But sleep brings the body swap again and again. Mysteriously, the pattern continues daily. "We/us, are interconnected!?" The two fumble about, unaccustomed to each other’s bodies, but start communicating by memo. As they awkwardly overcome one challenge after another, a bond develops between Mitsuha and Taki -- one that evolves into something more romantic. However, there’s something they still don’t know... The gears of fate are in motion, and the unexpected is about to be revealed.

DIRECTOR’S PROFILE Makoto Shinkai Makoto Shinkai’s theatrical release debut as a director came with VOICES OF A DISTANT STAR (?????, Hoshi no Koe) in 2002, on which he did nearly everything himself. The film sent shock waves through the anime world for its expression of an impressive world view. He then increased his staff to put out the masterpieces THE PLACE PROMISED IN OUR EARLY DAYS (Kumo no Muko, Yakusoku no Basho, 2004), 5 CENTIMETERS PER SECOND (??5???????, Byoosoku Go Senchimeetoru, 2007) and CHILDREN WHO CHASE LOST VOICES (???????, Hoshi o Ou Kodomo, 2011) before finally scoring a smash hit with THE GARDEN OF WORDS (?????, Kotonoha no Niwa, 2013) which grossed over a million dollars on a limited release. In this work, Shinkai handles the directing, writing in addition to cinematography, color design and editing to produce a work that gives full play to the unique artistic vision for which he is known, and is inlaid throughout with the essence of his past work. Like Mamoru Hosoda’s SUMMER WARS, this film is sure to form a cornerstone of Shinkai’s collected works. Topping the list of post-Ghibli, post-Hosoda animation directors as the next standard bearer for the genre, Shinkai should see his stock jump with this movie.
