Titan Books is offering SciFi Japan readers a chance to win a copy of their new book Schoolgirl Milky Crisis: Adventures in the Anime and Manga Trade. For anyone wondering "What the heck is Schoolgirl Milky Crisis?", the answer is that the book is a collection of articles and essays on manga, anime, and Japanese movies written by British author and scriptwriter Jonathan Clements. Clements is a highly respected authority on the subject, having co-authored The Anime Encyclopedia, written The Dorama Encyclopedia: A Guide to Japanese TV Drama, and provided liner notes for anime and Japanese movie DVDs. He has been a writer and columnist for the UK Sci-Fi Channel website, the BBC, Newtype USA, Judge Dredd Megazine, NEO, 2000 AD, and SFX Total Anime. Clements has also created scripts for audio dramas and novels based on popular series such as DR WHO and JUDGE DREDD, and has worked as a director, translator, and voice actor for the English language versions of more than 70 anime and manga titles, including SOL BIANCA, USHIO & TORA, HUMMINGBIRDS, and PLASTIC LITTLE. In his writings, Clements would often present insider information and gossip about the anime and manga industries. Not wanting to name names and get his sources (or himself) in hot water, Clements coined the phrase "Schoolgirl Milky Crisis" as the title of non-existent show used as a stand-in for whatever project he was writing about. "Whenever I had to cover my tracks", Clements explains, "I simply called it Schoolgirl Milky Crisis." The name stuck and began to show up regularly in articles and columns for various anime magazines. Running 416 pages, the paperback book Schoolgirl Milky Crisis: Adventures in the Anime and Manga Trade features a selection Clements` writings from the past two decades. It includes reviews, commentary, lectures, insights into classic manga and anime titles, liner notes, interviews and profiles of Japan`s top creators, previously unpublished works, and hilarious insider stories from the anime business. Among the 21 chapters are "Interviews and Profiles" (Barefoot Gen`s Kenji Nakazawa, Mamoru Oshii on GHOST IN THE SHELL, Katsuhiro Otomo, Neil Gaiman), "Voice Acting and Translation", "The Anime Erotic", "Chinese Animation", "Legalities", "Korea", "Toy Stories", "Sleevery" (liner noes for DVDs), "Manga Goes to Hollywood", "Digital Animation", and "Obits".

Fans of live action Japanese characters like Godzilla and Ultraman can find coverage in the chapter entitled "Rubber Monsters". This section includes a brief history of Godzilla, an interview with Godzilla suit actor Kenpachiro Satsuma, and a history of Japanese FX television. Of particular note are Clements` never-before-seen liner notes for a planned UK DVD of MOTHRA that was canceled when video company DD Home Entertainment Ltd. went out of business in 2007. There is also a short obituary for Akira Ifukube that includes some great quotes from the legendary composer. This is a fun and informative book that should appeal to anyone who enjoys manga, anime, and Asian cinema... particularly those who are interested in what goes on behind the scenes. But don`t take our word for it... enter the contest and find out for yourself!
