Over the last two years, Toho Music has begun reissuing some of their non-Godzilla related special effects film scores in deluxe packaging with re-mastered sound. Joining the already re-released soundtracks to THE THREE TREAURES (Nippon Tanjo, 1959) and THE MYSTERIANS/BATTLE IN OUTER SPACE (Chikyu Boeigun, 1957/Uchu Daisenso, 1959) is Yuji Koseki’s score to MOTHRA (Mosura, 1961), released as a dual disc set at the end of July. Fan response to the reissues has been very positive with most noting upgrades in sound quality. The last time MOTHRA was issued on CD was in 1995 (SLCS-5064). This new edition will no doubt benefit from fifteen years of advancement in sound preservation technology, with the first disc containing a reissue of the Original Soundtrack Album plus bonus tracks in stereo while the second will be the complete original soundtrack taken directly from the original master tapes in monaural sound. The film itself is one of few special effects movies by Ishiro Honda to not feature a score by Akira Ifukube. Here Yuji Koseki took the baton and crafted a marvelous classic score which gave birth to the famous “Song of Mothra”. So influential was this piece of music that maestro Ifukube himself used it in the big bug’s next appearance MOTHRA VS. GODZILLA (Mosura Tai Gojira, 1964). Although other songs would be done by different composers for the Infant Island Fairies, the “Song of Mothra” was revived in 1992 again by Akira Ifukube for GODZILLA VS. MOTHRA (Gojira vs. Mosura aka GODZILLA AND MOTHRA: THE BATTLE FOR EARTH, 1992). Subsequently it was then adapted by Toshiyuki Wantanabe for the REBIRTH OF MOTHRA Trilogy of the 1990s and then by Michiru Oshima in GODZILLA: TOKYO SOS (Gojira x Mosura x Mechagojira: Tokyo SOS, 2003).
