In 2003, Sam Raimi’s (EVIL DEAD, SPIDER-MAN) production company Ghost House Pictures licensed the remake rights to JU-ON (呪怨), the Japanese horror film series from director Takashi Shimizu. Shimizu was hired to direct the US version, released in 2004 as THE GRUDGE.

Starring Sarah Michelle Gellar (BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER), THE GRUDGE was a box office hit, grossing $188 million worldwide. Shimizu returned for the less successful sequel, THE GRUDGE 2 (2006), starring Amber Tamblyn (JOAN OF ARCADIA). A straight-to-video sequel, THE GRUDGE 3 followed in 2009.

That appeared to be the end of THE GRUDGE series in America, but Sam Raimi is back with what is promised to be “a twisted new take of the horror classic.”

Directed by Nicolas Pesce (THE EYES OF MY MOTHER), the new version of THE GRUDGE stars Andrea Riseborough (NOCTURNAL ANIMALS), Demián Bichir (GODZILLA VS KONG), John Cho (STAR TREK), Betty Gilpin (GLOW) with Lin Shaye (INSIDIOUS) and Jacki Weaver (SILVER LININGS PLAYBOOK). With a screenplay by Nicolas Pesce and a story by Nicolas and Jeff Buhler, THE GRUDGE is produced by Sam Raimi, Rob Tapert (EVIL DEAD, XENA) and Taka Ichise (THE RING, JU-ON).

THE GRUDGE will be released by Sony Pictures’ Screen Gems division on January 3, 2020.
